Higher Ground

a Dynamic Youth Enrichment and Leadership Program

“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:14

The Purpose Statement

Clifton Park Baptist Church Christian Academy (CPBCCA) proudly presents Higher Ground, a dynamic enrichment program that helps shape and elevate highly motivated and committed middle and high school students to strive for “higher ground.” Higher Ground will provide opportunities that assist students in reaching the “Promise Land” of their full spiritual, academic and leadership potential.

The Inspiration

In his “Mountaintop” sermon, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. paints a poignant vision of a “Promise Land” that the Lord had enabled him to see from the heights of a mountain.   Like Moses before him, Dr. King was certain that, while he may not get there, his people, those marginalized within our society, would get to the “Promise Land.”  This would be his last sermon.  Dr. King died from an assassin’s bullet the following day.

Today, Dr. King’s vision continues to take shape.  We live in a land where hope abounds and tremendous possibilities are realized through the support of family and community, and the creation of opportunities that were hallmarks of Dr. King’s dream.   These factors, along with personal determination, responsibility and faith, help shape young people into responsible citizens.

The Program Description

Higher Ground consists of two unique but complementary programs: Firm Foundations (FF) and College Bound (CB) that are designed to provide students with rigorous and inspiring enrichment activities.   Firm Foundations is the entry point for the Higher Ground program.  FF students in 6th-8th grades complete math and writing courses; are taught time management, study, and test taking skills; and participate in field trips and other forms of experiential learning.  Only students who successfully complete FF in 7th and/or 8th grade, or otherwise demonstrate a readiness for the CB program, are eligible to enroll in the CB program.

The CB program offers students in 9th -12th grade a customized sequence of essential college preparatory, cultural, and life skills enrichment courses. Students also receive comprehensive SAT test preparation, guidance through the college admission process, and opportunities to participate in visits to college campuses.  A unique feature of the CB program is a focus on developing skilled and confident communicators.

The Core Values

In the end, Higher Ground is purposed to create a college- and life-ready student, characterized by six indispensable core values:

  • Excellence – High Ground students are marked by high expectations to achieve their personal best in all that they commit to do.

About

History

On March 31, 2010, the Clifton Park Baptist Church Christian Academy was incorporated as a ministry of Clifton Park Baptist Church.

The decision for the Academy came out of two central convictions. First, Clifton Park Baptist Church saw the Academy as an opportunity to practice the principles of good stewardship. A child care center and academy offers a chance to invest our key resources:

1)Our Facility: along with its many exemplary classrooms;

2) Our Human asset: congregants with years of experience in education and other relevant areas;

3) Our Spiritual talent: godly leadership and a congregation that is committed to spreading the Gospel and sharing the love of Christ.

Secondly, Clifton Park Baptist Church saw the Academy as a response to a community and congregational need. A research of our surrounding area revealed a neighborhood in need of quality affordable child care.

It was further understood that, like our external community, our internal church community is made up of growing families in need of quality affordable child care. As a holistic ministry, committed to caring for the whole person, a child care center provides us with the opportunity to spiritually nurture and academically develop the children of our ministry.

With this, the church voted unanimously to incorporate the Clifton Park Christian Academy, and a Board of Directors was established from within the membership of the church to govern the process of incorporation and to carry out the business of the Academy.  The Academy was incorporated April 30, 2010 in the state of Maryland.  The following is a list of Board members and their respective offices:

  • Cassandra Lewis  Board Chair
  • Elizabeth Olakanye  Vice Chair
  • CJ Drewry Treasurer
  • Cheryl Callahan
  • Nana Dolce serves – Staff Liaison to the Board
